Universities offering Data Science in Nigeria

Universities in Nigeria are not left behind in the ongoing data revolution. Nigeria institutions have been offering data-related courses for years facilitated by departments such as Statistics and Computer Science, and recently few have coined the term Data Science and are venturing into artificial intelligence and machine learning research. This article presents an overview of the Data Science job in Nigeria and most interestingly Universities in Nigeria that are offering data science postgraduate programs.

It’s already an established fact that data is a gold mine and will be the driver of the 4th industrial revolution. About 2.5 quintillion bytes of big data are generated every day.

Data Science is the study of processes and tools used in deriving insights from a massive amount of data for innovative decisions or to power technological solutions. Data science involves the extraction, data transformation, data analysis, and prediction to gain actionable insight and information from raw big data. It employs techniques and theories drawn from many fields such as mathematics, statistics, computer science, and information science to extract meaningful insights from data. A Data scientist is therefore a person who combines a range of skills and tools to analyze data collected from the web, smartphones, customers, sensors, and other sources.

Data scientists are among the most sought-after positions in the world presently. Indeed and LinkedIn, which are top job sites in the world have been reporting a significant increase in demand for Data Scientists year over year. The salaries for the position are also elevated. According to Payscale.com, the average salary for a Data Scientist in the UK is £40,317 depending on experience. Prospects.com also reported that Lead and chief Data Scientists can earn upwards of £60,000, in some cases reaching more than £100,000.

The University of Wisconsin report for entry-level data scientist salary observed that despite a recent influx of early-career professionals into the field of data science, the median starting salary remains high at $95,000 in the United States.

In Nigeria, a person working as a Data Analyst/Data Scientist typically earns around 316,000 NGN per month depending on experience. Salaries range from 168,000 NGN (lowest) to 481,000 NGN (highest) according to Salary Explorer. The skill also provides people easy migration to other countries with more lucrative paychecks.

MyJobMag rated the data science job roles as one of the fastest-growing in Nigeria. Fintech companies and Banks are still the highest employers of Data Scientists in Nigeria.
